Penang War Museum

Penang War Museum
This fortress is located at Batu Maung Hill, south east of Penang Island. It was built in the 1930's by the British to protect the island from the invasion of enemies. This 20 acres site is located on a hill and you will be able to see the Straits of Melaka as well as the surrounding areas from here.

The construction of this fortress was done by The British Royal Engineers and local labourers. This complicated fort has all the features of a typical defence facilities with underground military tunnels and ammunition bunkers. The ammunition storage is located 9 metres underground with thick stonewall to enable it to withstand enemy's fire.

Canon firing bays, cook houses, well, logistic centre, hall, offices, sleeping quarters and medical infirmary are also preserved for your journey of discovery here. There are even underground tunnels that go all the way to the Straits of Melaka for access to submarines.

The underground weapon storage area that you can explore.

Another section of the underground bunker.

Once completed, this fort was manned by the British, Sikh and Malay soldiers. During World War II, this fortress came under attacked and fell to the Japanese. It was then used as a Japanese army base where interrogation and torture of prisoners for information were conducted here. Being labelled as a place of horror due to the cruelty of war, this hill was deserted after the War in 1945. It was abandoned for years until it was being cleared off and turned into War Museum by Johari Shafie 30 years later.

As the area is quite big, plan to spend about 2 hours here as you will be walking and climbing the stairs that abound on this hill. Proper signages and information about the artifacts are clearly displayed here. As it can be quite humid and hot during the day, remember to bring along a cap to protect your head from the heat of the day. Wear a comfortable shoes and have insect repellant ready to ward off the mosquitoes as you move deeper into the hill.

This huge gun can be seen at the compound of the museum.

Notice the ammunition storage with thick walls to prevent explosion in the event of bombardment from the enemies.

Penang Hill

Penang Hill
Historically, this hill was cleared by Captain Francis Light to grow strawberries. The oficial name of the hill was Flagstaff Hill (Bukit Bendera when translated into Bahasa Malaysia) but it is today commonly known as Penang Hill.

Known in the local language as Bukit Bendera, this hill is the first hill station in Malaysia and is about 830m or 2730 feet above sea level. The temperature at the peak is about 3°C to 5°C lower than the temperature at the hill below. Hence, this hill is an ideal place to escape the heat of the day.

Latest Update on the funicular train service: The train will be replaced by a RM63 million upgraded system which is expected to be ready in 7 months time. Hence, the current funicular train will stop operation from Feb 21, 2010 until September 28, 2010. Once it is ready, it will be able to carry a maximum capacity of 1,000 passengers/hour compared to 250 currently.

You can hike all the way up the hill or take the funicular train which has been operational since 1923. The upper funicular train broke down for about 6 months recently but is now up and running since 20 Dec 2008. If you plan to take the train, it is a good idea to go up during weekdays from Mondays to Fridays as it is usually crowded during the weekends. The train can only take up to a maximum of 80 passengers per trip. Going up during the night time will enable you to see the beautiful bright city below during a clear night.

Refreshments and snacks are sold at the tea kiosk on top of the hill. A hotel, police station and post office facilities are also located on the hill. Along the way up, you will see the lush greeneries of the tropical rainforest and bungalows that were originally built for the British officials. There is a 11-room Bellevue Hotel that you can stay if you want to but many would prefer to stay at the beaches or city where there are more choices of hotels.

If you are one who prefer to hike, you can hike from Penang Botanical Garden at the Moon Gate all the way to the upper funicular train. The total distance is 5.5km and it will take you about 3-4 hours to reach. It is better to take a guide along with you if you are not familiar with this trail.

Located at the north east of the island, this place was where it all begun. Within the vicinity of this fort, you will be able to see many century oldbuildings that are still intact and in-used as commercial offices today. It was at this fort that Captain Francis Light first set foot on this islandin 1786. The original structure was built with palm trunk. From 1808 to 1810, the temporary wooden fort was re-built with bricks and stones using Indianconvicts as labour. It is named after Charles Cornwallis, the Governer- General of Bengal, India at that time. This fort became the first military and administrative centre of the East Asia Company.

This star-shaped fort has cannons mounted along the perimeter of the walls. As you will observe while visiting this fort, this site is strategic in termsof millitary advantage as it is located by the sea opposite the mainland. Today, this 200 plus years old fort still attracts many visitors. The outersurrounding walls are still standing strong similar to what you would have seen in A Famosa, Melaka. A bronze statue of Francis Light stands near theentrance.

Later on, it fell into the hands of Acheh and installed in Kuala Selangor. Finally, this cannon was seized by the British and placed here in 1871.
